Freedom Flow Focus: Strong, Safe Shoulders
One of the most common places yogis pick up injuries isn’t in the hips or hamstrings — it’s in the shoulders.
Downward Dog, Chaturanga, Upward Dog — these postures look simple, but they carry a lot of weight (literally) through your shoulder girdle. And if the alignment isn’t right, over time it can cause strain, pain, or even long-term injury.
I know this first-hand. A few years ago, I went on the most incredible vinyasa retreat — beautiful location, energising practice, great people. But because I wasn’t paying enough attention to my shoulders in flow, I ended up with an injury that lasted over a year. A painful reminder that even in yoga, alignment is everything.
Why Shoulders Matter
The shoulders are complex: a ball-and-socket joint supported by a delicate network of muscles (rotator cuff), tendons, and connective tissue. Unlike the hips, they sacrifice stability for mobility. This makes them wonderfully versatile… but also vulnerable.
In vinyasa flow, we repeat movements like Down Dog → Plank → Chaturanga many times. If your shoulders collapse forward, your elbows flare, or you sink into your joints, you’re asking those tissues to carry too much load. Over time, this can lead to rotator cuff tears, impingement, or general “yogi shoulder.”
But the good news? With awareness, breath, and alignment — your shoulders can become strong, open, and free.
How We’ll Flow Tonight - Book Here
In tonight’s Freedom Flow yoga class in Norwich (6–7pm), we’ll break down shoulder-friendly alignment:
Downward Dog: Spreading through the fingers, rotating the upper arms out, and lifting the shoulders away from the ears.
Chaturanga: Hugging elbows in, stabilising with the core, and keeping shoulders above the elbows (not dipping below).
Plank to Upward Dog: Using strength in the chest and back to support, rather than collapsing into the joint.
Freedom Flow sequences: Building heat, strength, and mobility with music, breath, and energy — but always rooted in safety.
Because when we flow with correct alignment, we protect the shoulders, support the whole body, and keep yoga safe, energising, and sustainable for life.
