When people first arrive at SunFyr Barns for yoga in Norfolk, they often want two things: to feel stronger in their bodies and to find a little more calm in their minds. What many don’t realise at first is that alignment is the key that unlocks both strength and freedom.

I know this from personal experience. My yoga asana journey began 16 years ago — a little late to the party at age 37. By then, my body had already settled into its own patterns: misaligned hips, a knee that complained, rounded shoulders, tense jaw. When I threw myself into practice around 40 years old, I carried all of those patterns with me. Over time, without the right understanding of my body, these bad practises became sciatica, a torn meniscus, shoulder strain and tinnitus. Without enough awareness of alignment, I picked up strains and injuries. Annoying and painful at the time, yes — but also the best and most powerful teacher. Those injuries taught me the most important lessons I now share with every student: move with awareness, not just intensity.

Why Alignment Matters in Yoga

Yoga is more than just stretching or “working out.” It’s about creating balance and harmony in your body. Alignment is the foundation of this balance:

  • Prevents injuries – Proper alignment protects your joints, muscles, and ligaments.

  • Builds real strength – When you align well, your muscles engage effectively.

  • Improves posture and mobility – Alignment helps undo years of poor habits like slouching or sitting for too long.

  • Sustains your practice for life – You can flow freely without wear and tear holding you back.
